A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.
Pretend you are coloring and your sister takes the marker you were just about ready to use. If you gently and kindly say “Can I use that when you're done?” she will probably say “Okay” and give it to you when she's done.
But, if, instead, you shout “Hey!! I was going to use that!!!!” She may shout back at you “Well—you've been hogging the green!” If this keeps on going, instead of coloring nicely with your sister, you may be having time alone in your rooms.
So, use kind and gentle words with others and you may get to do more fun things with them. Shouting at others makes others shout back. Sometimes in our house, we have mandatory whisper times. Try being really mad at someone when you're whispering—it's pretty hard! Use your words wisely, and people will be a lot less angry around you.
Dear Lord, Please help me use kind and gentle words with others. Please forgive me for when I haven't done this very well. In Jesus' name, Amen.
